Get Rid of Pesky Weeds This Spring

One of the biggest challenges we face when we take care of the garden are those pesky weeds that always pop up during the spring months. Sometimes it can prove to be quite challenging and arduous when it comes time to find ways to get rid of them. They can be thick and brittle and can cover large areas of the yard.

Pull the Weeds

One method of getting rid of those weeds this spring would be to pull them, despite how difficult this might prove to be. However, you should make sure to follow a few steps to make the process just a bit easier to accomplish:

  • Make sure to water the lawn before you begin pulling any weeds because it will be a lot easier to do if the soil is wet
  • Use a tool to make a small incision in the soil around the weeds which will help loosen the weeds hold from the soil
  • You can then use your hands or a tool to wiggle the weeds out from the soil

Use Herbicides

If you have tried pulling the weeds but feel a stronger method may be needed, then herbicides are an alternative that you can try. If you would prefer to use an herbicide that contains fewer toxins, you can make an organic mixture using vinegar.

Weed-B-Gon and Roundup are also two brands of herbicides you can find in the store. When using these products, you should always closely follow the instructions and warnings on the package.

Vinegar or Roundup can go directly onto the leaves of the weeds and should not harm the surrounding grass. However, if you choose to use Weed-B-Gon, it is more selective with the weeds it kills, but it also will not kill the surrounding grass.

It is also recommended that you refrain from mowing the lawn for at least three days before you use any herbicides on the weeds. The application of the herbicides will prove to be much more effective over a larger area and will also give the herbicides a good amount of time to transfer to the roots of the weeds.

Weed Prevention and Control

If you have grown tired of spending hours in the garden trying to get rid of those weeds only for them to pop right back up the next spring, then there are a few things you can do to help control and even prevent the weeds from growing and attacking your garden or lawn.

  • Dig around in the garden only when you need to because when you cultivate, you are bringing some of these weeds to the surface
  • Mulch is good to use and helps the garden because it keeps the soil cool and moist and helps block the weeds from getting the sunlight they need to grow
  • Make sure when you water the plants, you are not also supplying the weeds with water. Depriving the weeds of water will help cut down germination by more than fifty percent
  • Leave grass clippings on your lawn because they can act as a kind of mulch and will help prevent the weeds from germinating
  • Let the grass grow to at least two to three inches as another method of depriving the weeds of receiving the sunlight they need to grow

Dandelions are by far the most common weed you will experience in your garden and around your lawn. Following all the steps and information as outlined in this article will also help rid your property of dandelions as well as any other weeds that threaten to move in and take control.
